Percussive: A Rap on the Door

percussive

Does nobody knock on the door anymore?  Amazon.com has become one of my favorite shopping stores, because I can avoid the crowds.  However, what I’ve discovered is that even UPS and FedEx delivery people seldom ring the doorbell, or simply knock on the door anymore.  What’s up with that?

Or… is it possible I’ve become so inoculated or desensitized to these sounds that I attribute my own failing as theirs?  I’m trying very hard as I write this to think back to Tuesday last week when we received a package by UPS and evaluate:  Did they ring or knock, or did I just not “hear” it, because I wasn’t in a “hearing” mode?

What if…

What if God is pounding on the door of your heart and mind, and in our 21st-century mindset we are simply not listening anymore?  We’ve seemingly developed the innate capability of “filtering” what we hear and don’t hear today.  You know people like this don’t you?  They can be sitting two feet away, and so involved with their “mobile device” that once it registers that you’ve spoken, they may or may not look up and respond, “huh?”

What if…

What if God is sending out signals that are clear and percussive like the rapping of knuckles on solid wood, resonating with grace, love, forgiveness, and compassion, but we fail to receive these signals or messages, because we can’t seem to tune in anymore?

What if …

What if God decided He would just filter us out, like we’ve filtered Him out?  Then what happens to verses like… Matthew 7:7… Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you?

What if we knock on heaven’s door, and God doesn’t even look up, but murmurs in our direction, “huh?”

You don’t really want God to do this, any more than you want your children or spouse to do this to you, right?

So, then, why do we do it?

Why do we miss out on the most significant aspects of a relationship with God?  When God knocks on your heart’s door, your mind’s door, it is a percussive reminder that you need Him more than you think you do.

Today, why not put down the mobile device, and pick up the actual written word of God, and spend some time with Jesus?

Sludge: trudging through

35 days until ChristmasIt’s “that” time of year.  It’s the season of holiday madness, black Friday deals, family tensions, disappointing football, and a general bah-humbug-i-ness that permeates and coagulates into an imperceptible emotional sludge.  During the very time of year when we should be most thankful, filled with joy, peace, and love, many struggle to just keep trudging through.

I’ll admit there are days like that for me.  So how do we focus?  Where do we find the courage and strength just to deal with the realities of life during the “holidays?”

Maybe it is as simple as understanding that commercialism drains us, and God Himself wants to fill us.  The lure and enticements of “the deal” can instantly shift our focus back to material, earthly concerns.  We fuss and fidget to find that perfect gift for the ones we love, or we worry that the hints we’ve been dropping about what we “want” for Christmas haven’t been heard… because it’s on “sale” this weekend.

This year my prayer is that you will find Thanksgiving Happiness, and the Joy-filled Christmas you’ve always wanted.  So, I’m praying that God will intervene personally in your life, in your mind, in your relationships, and in the core of your being with a simple truth to focus on.

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:23
“Behold! The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).

If God can make good on a four hundred year old promise, then we can trust that He will make good on the other promises He makes to us as true Christ-followers.  One promise that I pray you will focus on this year is this:

John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Think of all that emotional sludge of this season as “the thief” in this verse, and don’t let it rob you of the joy, peace, and hope of this celebration time!

Live in such a way, through the next few days and weeks, that your very abundant life demonstrates God’s glory to the world around you.

Particular: Just the Facts

Particular

Let’s be candid.  Let’s be honest.  Let’s be specific.

I know lots of good folks who say they “know” Jesus. There is a kind of “oh yeah, been there done that” to the way it comes across.  But I remember one story where Jesus was talking to the leaders of Israel, who themselves thought they knew God better than anyone else on the planet.  When Jesus confronted them with this statement, they went ballistic on Him.

John 8:32
And you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

So, I guess the question today, from me to you, is:     “How well do you know Jesus?”

If it causes you pause, if it challenges you a bit, I’m also offering this helpful list of “FACTS” or “Truth about Jesus.” I’m doing it to stimulate you once again to not just know about Him… but to know Him.  Personally engage with the Master of the Universe, and discover something new.  So go get your Bible and sit for a few minutes with the Truth.

Merrily We Droll Along

droll

I’ve always liked the “holiday” season.  With the coming of winter, the festive ways people adorn their homes and hearths, the abundance of food and friends gathered to give thanks, and a few weeks later give gifts in celebration of the Best Gift… it’s a great time of year, and it is upon us.

There are those around the world who don’t feel this way at all.  Caught up in relationships where conflict and strife are abundant, tends to taint the festivities.  Facing a newly diagnosed illness or disease will pretty much put a person in a dour mood, evident to anyone who engages them.  Additionally, not everyone will have enough to eat on Thanksgiving, much less a Christmas Ham.  For each person in one of these situations finding the merriment of the “holidays” is just like finding the Panda in this picture.

Yes, there is a Panda in this picture, and once you see it, you can never un-see it again.

This paradigm is also true for those who seek the real meaning of the “holidays.”

Because Thanksgiving is not about watching football on the “big” screen, or eating from a buffet fit for kings, to feed a family of five.  Thanksgiving is about “giving thanks.”  Right? And just like the image of the Panda, being truly thankful is elusive sometimes.

Pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. [1 Thessalonians 5:17-18]

I realize you may think I’m doing the typical preacher platitude thing again.  However, by quoting this verse, I’m NOT suggesting that you give “thanks” for whatever has robbed your “holiday” spirit this year.  I’m saying this because I’m pretty sure, from personal experience, that this is not what Paul is teaching in this verse.

There is a big difference in being thankful in the middle of the stuff of life that attacks when you least expect it, versus being thankful “for the attack itself.”  I’m suggesting that you consider it a joy, when God gets you through it, and act thankfully for God’s strength and power to deliver you, redeem you, and encourage you through it all.

I don’t thank God for everything.  Not everything is “thanks” worthy.  But what I do is, I thank God in everything I face.  This verse also doesn’t say to put on your happy face, when you don’t really feel so happy.

Back to the Panda in the image for this article.  If you haven’t found it yet, I’ll give you a clue.  The Panda is the only one without a smile on its face.  Why would he smile?  The Panda is in this herd of snowmen.  He’s probably feels a little out of place.

While all the snowmen merrily droll along, the Panda is out of its element, not happy, not joyful, and not thankful.

Even James isn’t saying be “thankful” [James 1:2-3]   Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

Joy is not necessarily a synonym for thankfulness.  Joy is a separate attitude all its own, fueled by a knowledge that nothing in our lives escapes God’s notice.  So I can be joyful in times of sorrow or loss, and in the middle of it all, I can be thankful for God’s love for me.  I can know that I am His and He is mine.

You don’t have to wear the smiling mask all the time.  You don’t have to be like the hundreds of smiling people who droll along through life, pretending everything is ok, when it isn’t.

However, we know what God’s will is for us.

  • be thankful … IN (not for) … the life issues you face
  • consider it joy … when you face these life issues
  • pray without ceasing

Pray for what exactly?

God’s glory to fill the earth?
God’s kingdom to come soon?
God’s will to be done in your life?
Daily food supplements?
Forgiveness?
To have the strength to forgive others?
Deliverance from temptation?

Sure, all that; it’s what Jesus Himself taught us to pray [Matthew 6:9-13].

And when you pray, don’t just spew meaningless spiritual verbiage in God’s general direction.

Or in some way offer droll statements in an attempt to diffuse your own pain.  Just be real, be genuine, be authentic as a true believer.  Stand out among the others around you who wear a smiling mask while they merrily droll along without hope.

If you haven’t found it yet, look hard for the Panda.  In that same way, through you prayers to God, while being thankful and joyful, look hard for God’s grace, and you will find it.  Nothing in your life escapes God’s notice.

Droll

Black

black - red heart

Black the…

color of sin, death and the darkness of night

image of my heart without forgiveness,

absence of light

Black is not my destiny…

for I am found, delivered, redeemed

my heart now filled with His goodness and light

directed to joy, hope, happiness, and life

Black no longer binds me…

just as it could not hold Him

it does not hold me

for I am in Him

and He is in me.

Temporary: Fall in Texas

I guess this is one of the reasons I love Texas so much.  This shot was taken from a cart path on hole #14 of the Slick Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay, November 2, 2017.  One of the golf course attendants told us it cost $1million to build.  That’s a stretch for me, but on this particular day, it was beautiful!  Not more than a breath of air, clean and bright, and the colors of fall were everywhere we looked.

It’s hard not to look at this image and see that God is indeed a wonderful designer/creator.

As winter approaches, soon the colors in this image will fade, making this one fleeting day all too temporary.  Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Dancing with Joy

Dancing

#18:  348 yard dog leg left, fairway bunkers at 275 on the right, green-side bunker back and left.  As I walked up to the green, after this exotic roller-coaster round of golf, 4 lost balls later, I was dancing with joy to learn I was about 5 feet for par on the final hole.  Apple Rock Golf Course that day pretty much ate my lunch.  But what a ride!  The greens were immaculate, and rolled true, leaving little margin for error in either direction or speed.  And I mean lightning fast speed!  At 6,536 yards from the “regular” men’s tees, this course is a beast.  As I was dancing with this beast, I found new meaning in the give-and-take of life.

Like Job at times, I suffered as this course would take a reasonably well-struck shot, and within a heartbeat of landing in the fairway, was out-of-bounds left due to the slope of the terrain.  This stuck me then, as it does now, as a perfect metaphor for this life I live today.

Job said, [Job 1:1]
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away.  Blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job’s perspective is not always easy to come to, is it?  Things are rockin’-and- rollin’ along and life’s pretty good, then whammo!  Everyone has “stuff” that happens to them, rocking their world, emotionally, financially, physically, or relationally.  When the “taken away” part happens, it usually doesn’t result in much dancing does it?

The same guy (Job) that had it all “taken away” also came to realize that God also “gave.”  The balance of knowing that God is sovereign, loves us unconditionally, and has a purpose for our existence, is what caused Job to declare through it all … Blessed be the name of the LORD!

This is the verbal equivalent of DANCING!  And when you’re dancing, you also gain another insight, verbalized by Job in 19:25.

As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will take His stand on the earth.  Even after my skin is destroyed, yet from my flesh I shall see God; Whom I myself shall behold, and whom my eyes will see and not another.

Sometimes it seems we are so close to God, so close to contentment, so close to discovering the real meaning of life, kind of like this 5-foot par putt.  Then our human frailty lifts its head, and we miss the putt.  Suddenly we allow our emotions to cloud our judgment, so we beat ourselves up for failing, instead of just enjoying the dancing.

In the now famous words of Lee Ann Womack

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens

Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
I hope you dance

Not for the Faint of Heart

Faint2

#12: 155 yard cover, 165 yards to the pin.  Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay down in the Hill Country of central Texas is a challenge for even the low handicap strikers of the golf ball.  That said, even a mid teen handicap, like myself, found this hole mesmerizing.  After waiting on the tee box for the green to clear, I promptly put my first ball in the water, short and right.  “Splish splash I was taking a bath!”  Not to be beaten, I teed up again and put the second on the green, and two putted for double bogey.  The photo above helps gain some perspective of just how difficult this game really is.  While the whole golf course at Apple Rock offered a great vacation experience, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want to play this course as my “home” course.  It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

At times my life seems captured in this imagine of a daunting tee shot.  Much of what I face today is so challenging, there are days when I think “why bother?”  Hazards and pitfalls loom at every turn, people and relationships can be dangerous and fraught with peril at the slightest twitch.  But my life is no different than yours, right?  You feel this way too at times, I’m sure.  Life itself is not for the faint of heart.  So how do we step up to the tee, throw down a ball, and gain the courage to go where God intends us to go?

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

If I fail, then I fail, and I tee it up again… with a confidence that with the help of God I can do this.

I did it last week at Apple Rock.

I’ll do it again today, in real life… the life that counts… for God.

[I took this photo on 11/1/2017 around noon.  Gorgeous day, lots of fun!]

Gratitude: It’s an Attitude right?

gratitude

I searched “gratitude examples” and found these top 4 links from the enquiry:

None of these articles really compare with the simple truth spoken by the Apostle Paul instructing the Colossians on living daily as a true Christ-follower.

Colossians 2:6-7
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

Colossians 3:16-17
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.  Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

The root word from which “gratitude” (in 2:7) and “thankfulness” (in 3:16-17) originates is “Grace.”

Gratitude stems from, or originates out of a true understanding of Grace.  Unmerited favor, underserved love, shown in our direction by the Creator of all things, demonstrated vividly in the death of His Son, and insured for all eternity by the seal of His promised Holy Spirit.

Only those in this world who have received this Grace are themselves capable of being truly grateful.  It is so clearly seen in the ugliness of ungrateful, entitled, egotistical people in this country, and indeed around the globe who see no need for God, or His grace.  Gratitude is lost on them, for they are proud, arrogant, self-made people.

When you walk into worship today, I wonder… will your first thoughts be filled with gratitude?  I have a better idea.  Why not start now, as you sit reading this.  Just open your heart in gratitude for the grace shown to you in Jesus Christ.  Thankfulness is the perfect warm-up exercise for the acts of worship where we hope to engage on this Lord’s day.

Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him.

A Surreal Life, stranger than Fiction

Surreal

I took this photo personally.  Standing there in the shadows of the Courthouse in Lahaina, Maui.  Now it seems all too surreal.  Wondering often whether I dreamed this event or not, I look up at the wall in my office where this photo hangs, and remember the day itself.  At times it still feels as though I’m living someone else’s life, as though I don’t deserve to be this happy, or to have these kinds of joy-filled experiences.  But here I am, and I took this picture.

Captured by the tree itself, and the details written on the plaque near where I stood, I snapped away from different angles, hoping for just one shot to capture the enormity of this living tree.  This Banyan tree reaches up 60 feet into the sky, and is the largest Banyan tree in the United States.  It has aerial roots, which grow into huge thick trunks when they reach the ground, thereby supporting the large canopy of the tree.  This particular tree has 16 major trunks in addition to the main trunk pictured here.  The canopy of this one tree covers almost an acre of the park.

This experience also brought with it a return to the marvel of Creation itself.  I loved the last line captured on the plaque.  “At sunset, you can hear the cacophony of thousands of birds, mostly mynah, chattering as they get ready to roost in the tree for the night.”  In my minds eye, I imagine the scene, and I’m transported back to that spot, and the joy of that day.

Isaiah the prophet described this kind of joy.

Isaiah 55:12
For you will go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

It’s surreal I know, but imagine this giant Banyan tree, joining with all the other giant trees of all species around the world, combined with all their “normal” sized tree-friends across the globe, as their limbs and branches like human hands bang together “clapping” at the joy of Jesus’ return.

Just before this verse, the prophet also recorded God’s own words:

Isaiah 55:11
So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

Surreal?  You bet.  Still true… still true.

L.A. Glow

It’s just a snapshot from the lanai in our cabin, with a new camera, purchased for my first cruise, but hey I like it.  The Ocean didn’t cooperate as much as I would have liked, but leaving Los Angeles the City of Angels seemed to glow with promise and hope for my future.  I think of this scene often, a year later now, and the hope and promise are still very much alive.

Acts 2:11 … Cacophony

cacophony

They were all together in one place… the wind rushed in and filled the house.  Each person was astounded as a flying flame flickered around the room and touched every one of them.  This Holy Spirit then used their voices in a cacophony of praise to declare “the MIGHTY DEEDS OF GOD.” [Acts 2:11]  The map here indicates the Jewish men (and proselytes) who stood in the streets of Jerusalem and heard these mighty deeds being proclaimed “in our own tongues.” [Acts 2:11]  The deafening noise, fueled by the power of the Holy Spirit, rolled over and over down each major thoroughfare and alleyway in the city, causing these men to stop what they were doing, and seek out the source of the noise.  Although, to each one, it was not noise at all, but the beautiful sound of the truth of God’s power compelling them to come and see.

And what did they find?

Peter and the other apostles standing on a patio above the street. As thousands pressed in from every corner, standing foot-to-foot, and toe-to-toe, with barely room enough to breathe, Peter “raised his voice and declared to them…” [Acts 2:14-36]

And what did they hear?

A month and a half before this moment, many of these same men were lining these exact same streets, and the roads that led into Jerusalem on their way to Passover.  Some of them were waving palm branches and calling out, “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD!”  [John 12:13]  And yet, just a short week later were yelling out, “Crucify Him!” [Mark 15:13]  Now they stand together, silent as if only one man, listening to the transformed apostle named Simon Peter.

As Peter preached this great sermon, three thousand of the tens of thousands who heard this message stepped over the line of faith, and instantly became Christ-followers.  For the rest who stood listening to Peter, they heard his words as nothing more than a cacophony of discombobulated nonsense and nothing short of heresy.

It reminds me of today’s world don’t you think?  Above the din of noise arising from every corner of the internet, social media, and fake news, there rings the voices of truth about God’s power to save through faith in Christ.  Some are able to hear it, respond to it, and know its power to change their life.  Others just hear a cacophony of noise, indistinguishable as unintelligent gibberish.

Frankly that’s how I feel about much I hear on the news channels today, where the talking heads who “suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” try to convince people all over the world to exchange “the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man…” [Romans 1:18-22]

It’s a cacophony in either direction… depending on the listener.

Out of which set of noise… will you find the truth?  Only in ONE.

His name is Jesus.

Cacophony

Except… what do you expect?

expect

And right about now, I really don’t know.  What to expect, I mean.  Because things have changed haven’t they?  At 60+ years old, thinking I’m still 35 or less, I had some expectations about growing older.  Some are close to what I expected, others are so far gone as to be funny or just sad.

When I look around our world today, I really want things to change again, but this time for the better, since in my eyes, it’s really, really bad out there.

Except… what do you expect?

When relativism is the rule of the day, and the concept of absolutes has been totally vacated by most of the sane men and women leaders in this country, what do you expect?

When “religious” ecumenism, in defiance of Scripture (2 Corinthians 6:14), seems to be all the rage, and the lines defining what it means to be a true Christ-follower are being blurred further and further everyday… what do you expect?

When jurisprudence in this nation has come to mean “guilty until proven innocent,” fueled by an angry mob mentality, which has “bought into” the relativistic, religious ecumenical ravings of the liberal mindset… what do you expect?

Do you really expect that we can keep going on the path we’ve set and survive?

Do you really believe that standing by and doing nothing to correct the maniacal ravings of corrupt politicians, false-teaching preachers,  along with entitled professional athletes, actors and media moguls, will yield any other result besides destruction?

The sheer lunacy of it all boggles the mind, but… what do you expect?

Is there anyone out there who can really solve this problem?
Is there an answer that makes sense?
Is it available now?

Yes, yes, and yes.

The answer to relativism is the Authority of Scripture, and that the Bible has everything we need to live justly with other people, and rightly before God, and is is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

The answer to “religious” ecumenism is John 14:6, where Jesus says:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Again, based on the authority of Scripture, and its absolute truth, this becomes exclusively true and we must believe in it ABSOLUTELY.

The answer to jurisprudence based in truth is to understand that God alone is the ultimate judge.  And again, from the words of authoritative Scripture comes this teaching in Hebrews 4:12-13

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Except that we believe this fundamental principle is in fact ABSOLUTE TRUTH…

… what do you expect?

Home of the Brave?

braveWhat does that even mean anymore?  Brave?

How brave is it to kneel or sit or raise a fist when the anthem is played… ugh!

How brave is it to disown and dishonor the men and women who actually demonstrated bravery with the lives they lost protecting our freedom? ugh!

How brave is it to rain down a hail of bullets from a high hotel perch on unprotected innocent people below? ugh!

How brave is it for some mealy-mouthed liberal “Hollywood” wanna-be-in-charge to continually bash the President of the United States without a clue of what that job really entails?  ugh!

Do we believe in anything anymore?  Is it time we just went out into the harbor and dismantled this statue?  When will this nation grow up and be big boys and girls?  It’s been 200+ years, you’d think by now we’d learn how to make it work.

Bravery?  The will to stand in the face of growing persecution (make no mistake, it is coming), when we say “we need God to step in and take control again.”

Bravery?  The ability to put everything you are into one basket called “Christ-follower” and live it out in real time.

Bravery?  Bravery?  What does it really cost?  Everything.

Matthew 16:24-26
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Loyal to the King

70 days until Christmas

Loyalty seems a rare quality in the political and cultural climate of these United States of America.  Think about it.  We see it abbreviated, “U.S.” or “USA” or “America,” but rarely is it stated in full these days.  Perhaps that is because the “United” part hasn’t been true for awhile now.  With the division and dissension growing by the hour, it begs the question if we’ll ever be “united” again.

I’m not much into the feminist movement, but an article this morning caught my eye because even in that “movement” or “agenda” there is dissension in the ranks caused by an article written by Mayim Bailik.  Amy Farah Fowler is one of my favorite characters from “Big Bang” played by Bailik. But she opened herself up to a backlash of rage with her op-ed piece for the New York Times about the Harvey Weinstein scandal. [click here to read it.]  Feminists immediately were divided on the support or condemnation of Mayim’s statements.

The NFL protests continue… see Terry Smiley’s protest against the protest here

ObamaCare and Tax Revision efforts continue… we could go on and on right?

We are anything but a United States of America.

Yet while we have this freedom, I will in my own way be loyal to the King.

This blog gives me a soapbox or a platform from which to speaks out, so here it comes.

I’m using this image weekly (at least once a week) until Christmas because:

  • I can
  • I believe it can help us refocus on what is important about expectations
  • Christmas in itself is a message of hope based in Christ alone
  • I want to be an alternative voice to the commercialization of the event

Christmas as an event has divided this nation.  Some rise up and want to change the whole meaning of the season by eliminating the very word from their advertising campaigns by using “Happy Holidays” instead of Merry Christmas.  In 2015 these 8 “Unique Alternatives to Christmas” were suggested by Michelle Nait’s article (here):
Yule, HumanLight; The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster; Krismas; Kwanzaa; Newtonmas; Festivus; and Saturnalia.  Trust me, I just don’t understand where people come up with this stuff.

Wait, yes I do.

In Luke chapter 12, the gospel writer says (vs.1)  that “… so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another…” and that day Jesus talked about the fact that God knows and cares about our circumstances.  He talked about the dangers of covetousness (a primary Christmas pastime), and how we should always be ready for the return of the Master (foretelling His own future return).

AND then He said something which many have never read or studied before…

Luke 12:49-53
I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!  But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!  Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.  They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

This doesn’t sound like a picture of the baby Jesus in the manger to me, does it to you?

Christmas is divisive … because He came.

Christmas might also be the single most important opportunity you will have this year to be LOYAL to the King.

You have 70 more days to be ready…

Loyal

Lest We Succumb

succumb

Do you identify with this image? I know I do.  That may shock some people who read this because they know I have been in ministry, both as a lay-person and a staff member in churches, for almost 45 years now.  Trust me when I say, “I know how you feel.”

There are always the voices… “go ahead, you know you want to,” and “is this really what God wants for you? Is this in God’s will?

Hearing the voices is not the problem.  The problem is deciding to succumb to one, or submit to the other.  Do you see what I did there?  Submission is where we yield our will completely to the will of God, knowing it is the best thing for our life.  To succumb is to fail to resist some pressure brought to bear, some temptation that comes our way, or any other negative spiritual force that seeks only to ruin our lives and destroy us.

1 Peter 5:8
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

But the devil doesn’t always look like a lion does he?  Especially to Christ-followers.

2 Corinthians 11:14
No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

So, you see the problem right?  Satan is really good at what he does, and so are all those fallen angels who succumbed to his leadership in rebellion against God.  [Revelation 12:4]  And if it is really hard to tell the difference (in appearance or voice) between the actual angels of light, and the fake angels of light (like fake news on the internet), then how do we discern which voice/message to heed?

Ah… now we’re getting somewhere.

Jesus told a great parable about Him being the Good Shepherd, and Christ-followers being His sheep.  The answer to our dilemma is found in the Gospel of John chapter 10.

John 10:5
A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.

John 10:14
I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

I’ve heard the argument from other Christ-followers that they don’t know Jesus the way the original 12 apostles did, and they never could.  Yet, I find this exactly backwards.  In many ways I think we can know Christ better than the apostles, in a different way.

Sure they had Him for three years, and had a lot of conversations, observed many miracles, and were taught by Him directly.  Yet they didn’t have one thing we have; a revelation of the complete picture of God’s will.  They didn’t have the writings of Paul that give us doctrine and instruction for how to live in this evil world.  They didn’t have their own personal copies of the Old Testament Law and the Prophets to pour over at their whim, discovering how all of these verses pointed the reader directly to Jesus as Messiah.  They just couldn’t see the big picture of God’s mighty plan of salvation at work in them or the future.

But we do. We have the whole shebang.

So here’s the thing.

Shouldn’t we know Him better?  Shouldn’t we be able to discern His voice and His will in ways that maybe they never could, because they didn’t know what we CAN know?

If you find yourself in a spot today, where you feel you are about to succumb to that negative voice of temptation or destruction, are you well-read enough in the WORD of GOD to distinguish the voice of the Good Shepherd who wants to show you the way?

In this same parable Jesus says: John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Don’t let the deceiver steal your life away, by succumbing to his voice.  Hear the voice of the Good Shepherd today, and follow Him.  Run to Him.  Find shelter in Him.  Find life abundant in Him.

If nothing else, begin the journey again with Christ, and read the Gospel of John.  Find out how Jesus answers your every need by saying, ” I am the…”

Cloaked, Hidden, Veiled

cloaked

Long time Star Trek viewers will know that a “cloaking device”  was a technology utilized by different intergalactic species to render ships, stations, equipment, personal, and sometimes whole planets to be invisible to the naked eye and/or sensors from enemy ships.  These devices were often used by starships to move unhindered and undiscovered, thus adding the element of surprise during an attack when the ship was uncloaked.  For more information on this sci-fi technology click here.

The human eye is a marvelous thing, but sight alone is only 1/5 of the sensory characteristics built into the average human being.  The human brain requires all of these five senses to properly assess and render insights and focus to the challenges we face in life.

Even then, when completely attuned to all the data input from these senses, life can at times seem cloaked, mysterious, or hidden as if trying to see through some dark veil.  Contrary to the poster above, everything is (not) in perfect focus if your vision is alright.  Just the opposite at times, what I see seems more like a hodgepodge of random letters arranged into a column for no purpose at all.

The apostle Paul said [1 Corinthians 13:12] “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.”

The Old Testament shepherd/king – David – said [Psalm 102:2] “Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress; incline Your ear to me; in the day when I call answer me quickly.”

Trust me when I say that this life doesn’t have to feel so mysterious, hidden or cloaked.  God isn’t holding out on you, or keeping Himself or His will cloaked behind a veil.  In fact, the mysteries have all but been erased through Jesus’ death on the cross, when the veil in the temple was torn completely in two, from top to bottom. [Matthew 27:51]

For those who are true Christ-followers today, Jesus made this original promise to his apostles, but in essence it was also intended for every person who trusts in Him as Lord and Savior.

John 16:13-15
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

Nothing in this life that is in God’s will for you to know will be cloaked, hidden or veiled from you.  However, make sure you hear what I just said, “that is in God’s will for you to know.”

I did not say we would know all things, or that all things would be in perfect focus.  It’s not wrong to ask “why?”  It’s just important to be realistic about the answer you might receive from God when you ask it.

I would alter the image above and say it this way.

Everything is in perfect focus if your vision is on Jesus Christ.

If not, life will more often than not seem veiled, hidden, or cloaked.

Cloaked

BELIEVE: 77 days until Christmas

77 days until Christmas

You must think me mad.  It’s October 9th and I’m bringing up Christmas.  But you have to know I’m not the first, right?  If you’ve gone into any supermarket or craft store or shopping center in the last 30 days you’ve certainly seen their shelves being filled with Thanksgiving and Christmas goodies or paraphernalia.

The Daily Post word prompt today is: “Believe.”  How can one not believe that Christmas is 77 days away?  The Calendar is fixed, and it doesn’t change just because someone disbelieves it, or ignores it, or pretends that Christmas doesn’t happen.

A man once said: “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”  Do you remember that one?

Well, knowing and believing are not always the same thing are they?  But facts are facts and they are hard to escape.

That said, here is another fact spoken by the same man who spoke the truth mentioned above…

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”  [Revelation 22:12-13]

Believe this fact or not for yourself, but whether you believe it or not will not change the truth of it, the fact of it, the certainty of it.

So, here’s the thing.  While we live our lives now based on a linear fixed time line that dictates Christmas will arrive in 77 more days, we cannot know the Divine time line which defines what day, month, or year the King will return.  But we can know the fact of it, and live our lives accordingly… if we believe it.

We can be ready for Christmas, there’s still plenty of time.  We can shop for that perfect gift, plan the menu and acquire the food for that special Christmas dinner, knowing full well, that except the King returns before hand, Christmas will arrive in 77 days.

What happens for you if the King arrives first?

Are you ready?

Do you know the truth?

Has it set you free?

Elastic Love

elasticJust suppose for a minute that the following verse was the last verse you would ever read from the Bible.

John 13:35
By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

Suppose this were true because there was no guarantee that tomorrow would arrive, making this the last time you ever had an opportunity to share with those around you what it means to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

How elastic would your time be?  To what ends or extremes would you go, to love someone today?

In what way would the world view your actions, so that in the end the world would say, “Now that person is a true Christ-follower!”?

Something to think about…

Maybe even to act upon…

Elastic

Stylish and Trendy

my mind

The folks who read this blog are literally all over the world.  Since January 2017 someone from somewhere in 82 different countries has clicked an article to read. (List of Countries 10-5-2017)

While this fact alone boggles my mind, there is something you should know if you’re new to this blog.

It is just not in me to be “stylish and trendy.”  My mind sort of takes me places that others would never think of, much less want to go see.  The chicken in this picture is not so much a literal image as it is perhaps a symbolic one.  More than anything else I truly want to communicate some truth in this world that is relevant and worth hearing, seeing, or investigating.

Forget walking around in my shoes, life really doesn’t work that way, does it?  For you to get inside my mind is even further removed from reality, so what’s the point?

The basic premise of this blog is to take the “Word of the Day prompt” from a site called the Daily Post. Using that as a starting point, I search to find something in God’s Word that speaks to me, some truth to be shared, related to the Daily Post prompt.  I usually include the prompt word at the bottom of my article.

Here’s what I believe…

I believe the Word of God is powerful, authoritative, and self-expressive.  Like I said, not necessarily stylish and trendy, huh?  But God didn’t call me into a personal relationship with Him to be fashionable.

Paul said in Romans 1:16 [powerful]
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the jew first and also to the Greek.”

I believe Hebrews 4:12 implicitly: [authoritative]
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The prophet of old wrote, Jeremiah 33:2-3 [self-expressive]
Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it, the LORD is His name, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

It is only when we approach life’s questions with an openness to God’s Word that we will find understanding, peace, and courage to keep going.

In the wake of incomprehensible violence, natural disasters, personal and private tragedies with illness or broken relationships, there is only one place to turn and find answers to get you through it all.

Turn to God’s Word, the original instruction manual for life.

It may not be fashionable, stylish or trendy, but taking this action will always get you closer to the truth than social media, the “talking heads” on the evening news, or the “headless voices” from news-talk radio.

Turn to the source of life itself… God’s Word.

Daily Post Prompt:  Fashionable

Interest in the “Why?”

Words on Wood

Was it a lack of love that turned a man’s heart so cold that he would slaughter innocent people at a Country Music concert in Las Vegas?  Is it that simple?

Should we blame the gun manufacturers for inventing these instruments of death, even though the originators had no knowledge of how these weapons would be used when placed in the hands of a loveless homicidal maniac?

Or how about the individuals who sold the man these rifles, should they be held responsible for the irresponsible and horrific actions of this one man?

On a different note, what would possess Haley-Geftman-Gold to post on social media that she wasn’t sympathetic because “country music fans often are Republican gun-toters“…???

Worse still, while Mrs. Clinton even now shows her true colors by speaking in ignorance about something she doesn’t understand, why does tragedy so often provoke politically motivated responses which neither solve the problem or address the real issue?

It just seems a daily ritual now to wake up to a another news story of tragedy, chaos, threat, murder, terrorism, war, or natural disaster… and I wonder if the ONE on high is not trying to get our attention.

I don’t agree with John Lennon and Paul McCartney that “All You Need Is Love.” Actually it takes quite a bit more than just love to change the world.  In 1967 the song was selected by Our World  for its “contemporary social significance.”  But think about what is being said, because in the 50 years since this song’s release the world is not a better place is it?

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It’s easy

Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time
It’s easy

Nothing you can know that isn’t known
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be
It’s easy

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

While the media and investigators surrounding the tragedy in Las Vegas search for the answer to the most pressing question “Why?”; we will probably never know precisely, because the only one who can definitively answer this question is dead.  Speculation abounds, and the “talking heads” of the media love their next 15 seconds of fame.

However, that’s not good enough, because we the people seem to always want to know the “why?” so in essence, we’re feeding the frenzy.

Actually the answer is ancient, but clear, and still applicable today.

Romans 1:18-25

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

America, World at large… we’ve lost our way.  I didn’t include it here, but I challenge you now as a reader, to go read the rest of the first chapter of Romans.  See for yourself if the imagery there does not match what is going on in our country and around the world today.  Just a quick read, that’s all I ask.

This world needs Jesus.  He is the only answer to our problems.  Trust in Him today to show you the way to live in a bent and demented world.

Mostly, It’s a Contest

popularDancing With the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, et al… it’s most a popularity contest.  I’m not diminishing or demeaning anyone’s talent or lack of, far from it.  I’m only too familiar with thinking myself to be more talented, skilled, or liked than I am, only to have the prize go to someone else.  Life, huh?

Now that I’m older, wiser, some might say “seasoned” or “veteran” of the whole life thing – I’m much more content to live with who I am.  Because I know just like the “dark-web” there is an unseen world out there that is not about popularity at all.  So I fight for the prize that will never tarnish.  I struggle to win the battle that will last through eternity.

Not many will vote for me to win, some in fact will cheer my competitors, simply for the fact that they don’t want me to win.  I get it.

Some will not like my message, they will seek to silence me.

I rest in the grace of the one who carries me daily through the rigorous struggle while I walk in the mire of this earthly clay.

I adopt the words of the Apostle Paul.

Philippians 3:14
I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Jocularity, Jocularity

witty

M*A*S*H was one of my favorite shows during the early 70’s when I was in college and trying to find myself.  The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital found life in the Korean war unbearable at times.  Whether by the weather, or circumstances of war, they were forced to make their own fun.  The whole show is at times poignant, at times brutally sad, but most episodes are filled with the shenanigans and exploits of doctors and nurses who become a witty, if not hilarious close-knit family just managing to get through the pain.  Perhaps my favorite character of the cast was Lt. Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy.

One of the great episodes of M*A*S*H was an episode titled “Movie Night.”  The whole gang has been fussin’ and bickering, so Father Mulcahy procures Colonel Potter’s favorite John Ford western classic, My Darling Clemetine, to be shown in the mess hall that night. The film is full of cuts and splices causing it to break and Klinger having to turn on the lights to fix the thing.  When the film breaks the second time, Father Mulcahy plays the piano and leads the raucous crowd in “Gee, Ma, I Wanna Go Home.” The film keeps breaking periodically and the next breaks become a Father Mulcahy impersonation time.  Hawkeye, Klinger, Frank Burns, Margaret, Radar, all take their turn at the witty quotes, with the closing statement made by Colonel Potter in a fit of chuckles, “Jocularity! Jocularity!”

Father Francis was my favorite character because I identified with him on so many levels.  No I’m not a catholic priest, and no, I’ve not been to war.  What I found most in common with the good Father was his earnest desire to make a difference.  In fact, Father Mulcahy was earnest about everything.  So earnest to do a good job when his supervisor came to camp, that he got a little tipsy dipping into the sacramental wine.  Most of the time he went about his business of trying to offer counsel to young soldiers, or giving last rites to those young brave men who wouldn’t make it through surgery.  He was witty and funny and always willing, over-zealously willing, to jump in and offer a hand with just about any task… just to make a difference.

Perhaps if you’ve been reading my blog this year, and follow it regularly, you’ve noticed my propensity for taking on a serious tone, applying Scripture and God’s truth to the topics each day.  I guess that’s because most days I see the world around us and it seems like a spiritual nuclear war zone to me.  The stakes are too high to try to force myself to be witty or clever when eternity is at stake.  When the funny times do come, when the diatribe goes slack and the smiles come out, I count my blessings and laugh along with everyone else.  Just like the good Father Mulcahy.

[Ecclesiastes 3:1-4]

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—

A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

      A time to kill and a time to heal;
A time to tear down and a time to build up.

      A time to weep and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn and a time to dance.

Take the time today to experience the witty, clever, funny side of life.  God designed these parts too, just for you.

Introduction then Indoctrination

launch

On February 25, 2007 an advertisement aired on ABC introducing Apple’s first iPhone.  In June 2007 the iPhone was released and the indoctrination was launched.

At that time, 10 years ago, I was not using apple technology, although I had been around it since my early days in computer retail selling Apple II’s.  This Apple product sold for $1298 with only 4K of ram in 1983.

The Apple iPhone 8 base unit with 64GB (34 years later) was introduced at $999.  Predictions of iPhone 8 unit volume for the first 12 months is 241.5 million.  This is what I call an introduction and indoctrination plan that worked.  I realize there are people reading this right now who do not purchase Apple products, and never intend to do so.  That’s ok, I’m not endorsing them, each to his own I say.  I’m sure Samsung, Motorola, Nokia all make a good product, but can we all just agree that Apple (at least according to the latest Gartner data) is leading the industry in market share (as of Q4 2016).

Introducing a new idea is one thing.  Indoctrination of this new idea in such a way that it impacts the entire world, is a whole other thing altogether.

The Old idea in the first century had been around for a about 1400 years, first given to Moses while he lead God’s people out of bondage in Egypt to the Promised Land.  We call it by different names:  The Law,  The Torah, etc.  Made up of the first five books of the Old Testament, the Old idea was God’s role as Creator, God establishing a Nation, and God’s Laws for that Nation.  The initial instruction set was only 10 Commandments, encompassing everything a person would need to relate to God and to his fellow human.

  • No other gods before Me
  • No idols
  • No using my name in vain
  • Keep the Sabbath day
  • Honor mom and dad
  • Do not murder
  • Do not commit adultery
  • Do not steal
  • Do not lie about your neighbor
  • Do not covet your neighbor’s stuff

It just seems to me that even now, after 3500 years since this stuff was written down [Exodus 20:1-17] we still don’t do any of these things very well.  I realize that these original DOCTRINES were given to a specific group of people (the Hebrews), but God’s intention was that the Hebrews be a light to the world about God’s blessings.  By now we should be so convinced of God’s blessings that the world would look different than it does.

Here’s the thing, after 1400 years of indoctrination the Hebrew people were not only NOT a light to the world, they had been so cut off from God that the last prophet to arrive, announced the coming of God’s Kingdom and the arrival of Messiah, the NEW IDEA.  So steeped in the Old idea were the leaders of Israel, that they had no clue God was doing something New.  The arrival of Jesus is Good NEWS!  The introduction of Messiah should have been the pinnacle of Jewish existence.  Instead it became infamous for the actions of the Sanhedrin, orchestrating the death of the Son of God.

Here we are, 2000+ years removed from this event.  And while there is much indoctrination among the many different beliefs about who Jesus was, or is, or will be, when I look around our world I’m a little sad that we don’t seem to have made the same impact today as the first apostles did when it all started.  Peter preached on two separate occasions and 3,000 and 5,000 men respectively, came to be first time Christ-followers.  Where is that kind of preaching today?

When the church gathered for prayer, because two of their own were chained to the wall in a prison cell, God heard their prayers and the chains fell off, while an angel of God lead them out of that jail.  Where is that kind of praying today?

Have our hearts grow so cold?  Have our wills become so weak?  If we can’t get folks to just stand up and hold their hand over their hearts for the singing of a national anthem, how could we ever expect them to stand and do battle against the spiritual forces of evil at work in this world today?

We’ve lost sight of what Jesus said about His church.  Do you remember?

Matthew 16:18
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

Jesus wasn’t talking about Peter building a church.  Jesus was talking about the faith statement Peter has just uttered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

If this is the faith statement, and the Church is living this out in truth and power, then why does it seem Satan and Hell are winning so many battles today?  … in the media, in politics, in our school systems, in almost every entertainment venue, including the NFL?

We’ve fallen prey to his deceptive ways.  Tolerance was introduced as the Prime Directive.  Now it seems the indoctrination of “tolerance” has led us to the point of no return.

God save us from ourselves, and from those who would destroy us with agendas of hate and condescension.  God, show us the way back to you.  God, launch us back in Your direction…

Is Planet Earth Home?

planet

Whew!  We escaped the latest doomsday scenario of September 23rd, so let’s party on, right!?  Not so fast! What about the super volcano sitting under Yellowstone National Park?  According to Brian Wilcox of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the threat to our planet from a super volcano is exponentially greater than being hit by an asteroid or comet from outer space.

In the article first published in August 2017 by news.com.au, the Yellowstone super volcano is a greater threat to Earth, and if it were to erupt it would bury much of the United States beneath a thick layer of ash and lava.  Not to mention the “real” global climate change that would ensue.  The article highlights NASA’s plans to diffuse this possibility by monitoring the magma temperature, and if it gets too high, drilling vents to let off steam, thereby preventing an eruption.

I don’t know about you, but this still sounds a lot like science fiction.  But there you go.  Life on this planet most of the time, is stranger than fiction.

I guess the bottom line for me is this.  While I love my life here on planet earth, and on most days I feel very privileged to be alive, and blessed beyond reason, I have a fundamental understanding that this is not my long-term dwelling place.  I understand that part of our responsibility on earth is to be good stewards of this planet.  It was part of the basic directive which God gave Adam (subdue it).

Genesis 1:28
Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Mankind is to be the “good” steward of the planet.  There is no other way to interpret this directive.  That said, mankind is considerably more corrupt and sinful today, than when these words were spoken in the idyllic setting of the Garden.  It bears out in logic and reasoning then that we might want to look elsewhere in God’s revealed Word, about what might be coming next on our planet based on humanity’s current level of depravity.

The Book of Revelation and its apocalyptic nature, has been the fuel of many debates over the centuries. Chapters 16-18 describe the very end events as God rains judgment on evil men in what are called the Seven Bowls of Wrath.  The seventh bowl is seen in verse 21 of Revelation 16.

And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was extremely severe.

One hundred pound hailstones?  Really?  How is that even possible?  Where would these hailstones have to originate?  Could a super volcanic eruption result in this kind of phenomenon?  Is this a symbolic term, or a literal description?  See where I’m going with this?  Whether literal or symbolic, what is God trying to communicate to us here?  What does He really want us to know?

If all we do is read chapters 16-18 about a coming judgment, and then quit reading because it’s too hard to understand, then we miss the most important part about what God wants us to know.

Jesus said to His disciples…

John 14:1-3
Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.  If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

In Revelation 19-22 Jesus reveals to John more of the details regarding the “I will come again and receive you to Myself” part of this promise.  One of the details in Revelation 21 is a new planet.  John says, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

What we can know from this is the one we inhabit now, this tired old planet, will not be our final home.  Living now as though it is, is to contradict what God’s word says.

So Peter instructs us… 1 Peter 2:11
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.

Billy Graham encourages us… “My home is in heaven.  I’m just passing through this world.”

Jesus promised us a place to be with Him, and that He would come and take us there.

This planet my home?  I don’t think so.
